Tomatoes Protect Skin From Wrinkles

You want to know the secret of youth? By consuming tomatoes, your skin will remain intact.

The team of researchers from the British Society for Investigative Dermatology which is a combination of the University of Manchester and Newcastle found that eating five tablespoons of tomato sauce per day can help improve the skin and protect it from the effects of ultraviolet light. The result turns out, tomatoes effective in preventing premature aging, even in patients with cancer.

The researchers found levels of antioxidants in tomatoes is called lycopene. These antioxidants that act provides benefits to the skin. Meanwhile, the content of important substances in the tomato will achieve the optimal concentration when cooked properly. In addition, these antioxidants also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

The researchers conclude that antioxidants in tomatoes also provide skin protection from the negative effects of sunlight. Initially, the researchers provide about 55 grams of standard tomato sauce to the 10 respondents. The tomato sauce was a lot of original content of tomatoes. In addition, respondents also were given 10 grams of olive oil per day. For other trials, they were given only olive oil. After a three-month experiment, the skin of the respondents who consumed tomato sauce showed 33% more protected from sunburn. This is equivalent to the efficacy of sun cream and procolagen high level. Procolagen is a molecule which gives the skin nutrients and keeping them tight. The test also uses ultraviolet light rays.

"Diet using tomatoes can increase the level procolagen in the skin significantly. This can increase the level of improvement that has been re-skin aging," said Lead researcher Professor Lesley Rhodes, a dermatologist at the University of Manchester. He said, tomato dose levels given to the respondent is not too big. Although a small quantity, was able to provide significant benefits.

That's why, he said the tomatoes are potential additional nutrients that are very helpful. Not just an alternative way other than using anti-sun cream. However, this still early studies and brief so that team still needs further research in order to get a scientific analysis of the benefits of lycopene for the skin. The research team also did not recommend to people to abandon the use of anti-sun cream and replace it with tomatoes.
